Friday was not a good day for the Greene County baseball and softball teams.
A tough matchup with the Gilbert Tigers finished with a sweep and two more losses for the baseball team.
An inability to score is what did the Rams in, only scoring in the seventh inning of each game, with just nine total hits. The Rams lost the first game 8-1 and the second game 2-1.
Nick Breon took the pitching loss in the first game, allowing six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. He gave up four earned runs. Joe Carey pitched in relief, giving up six hits, walking three and striking out one.
Austin Delp took the loss in game two despite not giving up an earned run in a complete-game performance. He allowed three hits, had two walks, hit one batter and tallied three strikeouts. Four errors dented the Rams’ chances of victory.
Now 4-12 on the season, the Rams will play in the Saydel tournament Saturday.
For the softball team, four errors led to an 11-6 loss for the Rams.
The Rams let Gilbert get off to a quick start, with the Tigers scoring four runs in the second inning — made easier by the Rams committing three of their four errors in the second frame.
Emma Hoyle took the loss for the Rams, only pitching the first two innings before Jenna Beyers relieved her the rest of the game. The Rams left six runners on base over the course of the game, and gave up 12 hits to Gilbert’s batters.
Greene County is now 3-11 on the season and will play in the West Marshall tournament Saturday.
